How AI has affected Graphic Designers (from a Freelancer’s experience)

Not many people that I have interacted with really understand what graphic design is. That lack of understanding and respect for the profession has made the rapid usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) all the more upsetting. In short, I do not believe graphic design will fully die, but I do believe that this newfound access to AI tools will further erode the deserved respect for intellectual work.

It is a pattern I am all too familiar with. People with access to tools and knowledge will think they know more than a professional and even I have been guilty of doing such. But, this way of thinking towards say a logo or a complete rebranding of a company is a trap for many potential clients. A great, professional Graphic Designer will spend a copious amount of time conducting research catered to a project to then “pump out” well thought out designs. While keeping the designs unique and recognizable against competitors, the designer’s taste and knowledge flow through them, which AI will never be able to fully replicate. This is because despite their similarities and susceptibility to change, designers usually have a signature touch to their work. There are some clients out there that already know this, hence, they may reach out to a specific designer. However, there will be those who think they can be a graphic designer, use AI, and disregard how valuable graphic designers are.

Instilling more respect for graphic design and creative fields alike will be a challenge, but using social media to make more people aware of their value seems to be a great starting point.
